Midtown Monarchs: Join us Saturday June 3, 2023 at 2:00PM in Midtown Brandywine’s Pocket Park and help start Midtown’s Mission to Support Monarchs! Treats will be served.
Monarch butterflies are amazing creatures. They can fly from Canada to Mexico in one month’s time; they transform from caterpillars to butterflies through a magical process not fully understood, called metamorphosis; and they eat plants that are poisonous to most other insects but have developed a resistance to this toxin. This year Midtown Brandywine will kick off a brand new butterfly raising program. Learn how to plant the right plants to attract them (hint: it’s milkweed), how to spot their eggs, how to care for their caterpillars and watch them transform into butterflies, and finally how to tag and release them to the skies so they can make their long journey back to Mexico.
This program will run through the summer into early fall. We’ll be hosting our butterfly cages at the Pocket Park. This butterfly adventure is a great activity for all ages and is beginner friendly – no previous experience necessary, just a willingness to learn. Human intervention in raising monarchs while creating new habitat is a crucial step in the survival of this rapidly declining species. This is a must-attend event for preservationists and anyone with an undying fascination for the natural world and an appetite to witness the hidden miracles that happen right in our backyards!
