Delaware's loveliest neighborhood

Midtown Brandywine is one of the most historic neighborhoods in Wilmington

If you are looking for a place to live that combines urban convenience, historic charm, and a vibrant community, you might want to consider Delaware’s Midtown Brandywine neighborhood. Located near Wilmington Hospital and Brandywine Creek, this small neighborhood of Victorian-era brick homes has a rich history and a lot of character.

Midtown Brandywine traces its roots back to the late 18th century, when it was part of Brandywine Village, a group of flour mills and homes along the creek. The mills were powered by water from the creek and produced flour that was shipped all over the world. Some of the mill owners built elegant granite houses that still stand today. The neighborhood also had shops, taverns, churches, and schools that served the mill workers and their families.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as Wilmington grew into an industrial city, Midtown Brandywine became more urbanized and diverse. New brick rowhouses were built to accommodate more residents, many of whom worked in nearby factories or offices. The neighborhood also saw an influx of immigrants from Ireland, Italy, Poland, and other countries who brought their cultures and traditions with them.

Today, Midtown Brandywine is a thriving neighborhood that offers residents an urban feel with a touch of history. The neighborhood has a mix of young professionals, families, retirees, and long-time residents who enjoy living close to downtown amenities such as bars, restaurants, coffee shops, parks, and cultural venues. The neighborhood also has an active civic association, the Midtown Brandywine Neighbors’ Association that organizes events such as block parties, yard sales, clean-ups, and the website you’re currently reading, midtownbrandywine.org!
