Midtown Brandywine is a neighborhood full of charm and character, and one of the unique features that sets us apart is the Little Free Library in Pocket Park. This beautiful and functional library was designed by local artist Natasha Poppe, and it has become a beloved part of our community.
The Little Free Library was sponsored by the Midtown Brandywine Book Club. The cabinet was originally a kitchen cabinet, donated and renovated with the handiwork of Glenn Kocher. We owe him many thanks!
Our design was also one of the winners of the New Castle County Little Free Library design contest! We were awarded a $100 certificate at the Hockessin Book Shelf by New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer.
The Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. It is a way for residents and visitors alike to share and discover new books and authors, and to promote a love of reading. The library is open to everyone, and it is a wonderful example of the generosity and community spirit that make Midtown Brandywine such a special place.
The design of the Little Free Library is as unique as our neighborhood. Natasha Poppe’s vision for the library was to create a library case that was not only beautiful, but also functional and durable. The result is a stunning piece of art that also serves as an important community resource. And, fun fact, it is also a pokestop in the popular game Pokemon Go!
It appears that many of our fellow Delawareans spent the COVID-19 pandemic lock-down period designing and building Little Free Libraries. Feel free to join the Little Free Libraries of Delaware Facebook group and support reading in our communities!
The Little Free Library is a testament to the power of community involvement and creativity. It is a shining example of the many ways in which Midtown Brandywine residents come together to make our neighborhood a better place. We are grateful to Natasha Poppe for her beautiful design, and we look forward to many years of sharing and discovering new books through the Little Free Library in our lovely Pocket Park.
