The Brandywine Zoo is an accredited zoo managed by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Division of Parks and Recreation, and supported by the Delaware Zoological Society, the not-for-profit partner of the Brandywine Zoo. With its diverse range of animal species, engaging educational programs, and charming atmosphere, the zoo is a beloved local institution that reflects the values and culture of our community.
The Brandywine Zoo features animals from the tropical and temperate areas of North and South America, Asia, and Africa. Our friendly, neighborhood zoo is small with mostly smaller animals. The zoo’s team provides numerous learning experiences, conservation projects, community outreach programs, and special events for all ages throughout the year. The zoo is open every day, except Christmas, from 10am-4pm.
The Brandywine Zoo was granted accreditation by the AZA Accreditation Commission after a detailed review process that analyzed all aspects of the facility’s operation. The AZA has been the primary accrediting body for zoos and aquariums for over 40 years, and the Brandywine Zoo is the only animal care facility in Delaware to meet the rigorous AZA accreditation standards. Less than 10% of animal exhibitors in the US are accredited, and there are currently 238 AZA-accredited facilities and 15 AZA-certified related facility members throughout the U.S. and 12 other countries.
The zoo’s history is rich, dating back to 1886 when the land was purchased. The idea of a zoo was born in 1904, and the Wilmington Free Zoological Association was formed in 1905. New animals were donated 1925-1928, and the bear exhibit and monkey house opened in 1928. The Children’s Zoo opened in in 1950, and Delaware’s New Castle County took over the zoo in 1971. The Delaware Zoological Society was founded in 1979, and the zoo celebrated its centenary in 2005. Red pandas came to the zoo in 2014, and the Madagascar exhibit opened in 2020. The Animal Care Center opened in 2022.
